LISA GARDNER, author of Live to Tell - Thursday, July 15 at Horsefeathers Restaurant

live-to-tell-sm.jpgOK - it is not truly summer until Lisa Gardner kicks off a new novel with us. This year, it is a doozy. Live to Tell is a fast paced thriller with a really thought-provoking story line. I couldn’t put it down and keep thinking about it, days later.

We’re having our event at Horsefeathers because we thought it would be fun! We’ll be upstairs and we encourage people to come early and grab some dinner before the event. This is going to be a fun night. I will be reminding everyone again, but mark your calendars NOW - you don’t want to miss this.

Imagined - The John Lennon Song Project and Devonsquare at Stone Mountain Arts Sept 19th

Along with several prominent studio musicians, Rex Fowler (Aztec Two Step) and Tom Dean (Devonsquare) have teamed up in this labor of love to celebrate the genius and artistry of John Lennon. As a gift to John for his 70th birthday on October 9, 2010, they have re-imagined exquisite acoustic renditions of Lennon’s legendary Beatles songs.
Besides a smattering of tasteful percussion and Rex and Tom’s distinctive acoustic guitar and vocal stylings, featured instrumentation include cello, violin, mandolin, mandola, bass, slide guitar, accordion and chromatic harmonica.
(hear a sampling of the new CD here)

Devonsquare will be taking the stage for a full show for the first time in 5 years. The loss of singer and original founding member Herb Ludwig was a big one. His clear bell of a voice was part of the exquisite three part harmony the group was known for. Tom Dean and Alana Macdonald with the help of Robbie Coffin (acoustic & electric guitars) Teg Glendon (bass guitar) and Rex Fowler (vocals) have decided to once again perform the songs so many people have asked to hear.

Tickets are now on sale at Stone Mountain Arts.

Redstone Rocks! Free program on historic local quarry

For many years, the granite quarry at Redstone, New Hampshire – located at the south end of Conway’s Green Hills – was renowned for the quality and variety of its products. Though the site’s hammers and drills have long been silent, there are stories to be told about the people who worked there.

To learn more about this famous quarry, local residents and visitors alike are invited to attend a free public program on the evening of Friday, April 23. The program, offered by the North Conway Public Library, will feature local resident Steve Swenson.

Swenson’s ancestors were among those who operated the quarry, which saw activity from about 1883 into the 1940’s. The remarkable pink and green granite from Redstone made the quarry famous, and its stone was valued for building projects throughout the region and at least as distant as Washington, D.C. The community which supported the quarry was once a very busy one, including, in its hey-day in the 1920’s and 1930’s, such features as a store, school, church, railroad station, and boarding house.

Swenson will offer a slide presentation and will also have maps, memorabilia, and other materials from the quarry on display. The information and images shared by Swenson will allow program participants to envision the once thriving local community of Redstone.

The Redstone Quarry slide program will take place at 7:30 PM on Friday April 23 at the Mount Washington Observatory’s Weather Discovery Center, Main Street in North Conway Village (next to Citizens Bank). Parking is available next to and behind the building. The program is provided free and open to the public by the North Conway Public Library; donations are gratefully accepted. Special thanks are due to Steve Swenson for his generous contribution of time and expertise, and to the Mount Washington Observatory for its in-kind support.

As a special feature, Swenson will also feature a two-hour walking tour of the quarry site on Saturday, April 24, at 9:30 AM. Participants will be able to see what remains of the stone quarries, work buildings, and quarry machinery. Further details about the tour will be available at the Friday evening program.

For more information about the Redstone Quarry program and tour, please call the North Conway Library at (603) 356-2961.
